The Bunker Wargames Holiday Centre in Newark - read on for more information! The Last Defence of The Bunker - by Shaun Mclaughlin The first incarnation
of The Bunker Wargames Holiday Centre, based around
my home in York, used an extension to the garage to house the games, while
a local public house provided the accommodation. Between 1994 & 1999
The Bunker had over 200 visitors (including several raiding parties from
Darkest Birmingham), all enjoying games that, while ‘not Waterloo’,
were focused firmly on fast & furious excitement. In 2000 all this
came to a close, as I was appointed Convention Centre Manager at the newly
opened Foundry Fortress in Nottingham. Come with me now, dear reader, and I shall lead you to the subterranean world that is The Bunker! The journey starts
as we descend into the cellar area, the walls of the stairway are decorated
with replica propaganda poster from both World Wars, at the very top is
Churchill inviting us to ‘Go forward together’. The flight
of stairs leads to a small hall area, with three rooms radiating off.
One of these is given over to storing figures/terrain for the games and
another holds the salvable stock. The remaining room houses the business
end of The Bunker, an 11’by 6’ playing area, as well as even
more equipment and more buildings than Barret Homes ever put up! Four
or five players are the norm for a Bunker Wargaming weekend. The full Bunker programme involves an introduction, followed by evening meal on the Friday evening. Saturday starts with a full English breakfast, and the into the first game of the weekend. A break is held for a sandwich lunch, with tea & coffee available throughout the weekend. A smaller ‘filler’ game takes place late on the Saturday afternoon and the players break for their evening meal around 6.00pm. The rest of the evening is free and players may go and enjoy the many Emporiums in the Newark area. Sunday’s gaming starts after breakfast with the third & final game taking place. Sandwiches are served around 1.00pm and the gaming draws to a close at approx. 4.00pm. All the gaming requirements are decided before hand, so that all the players have to do is roll the dice. The cost for this
Wargaming extravaganza is a mere £140.00 per person.
